Palladone

Did You Know?

that a combination of Palladone and alcohol can be fatal?

Experienced Palladone Lawyers

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the narcotic Palladone removed from the U.S. market on July 13, 2005, citing serious and potentially fatal overdose reactions when the prescription drug is taken with alcohol.  Ironically, the drug was just approved by the FDA in September of 2004.  If you or someone you love has been injured by Palladone use, you may be entitled to compensation.  The lawyers at Brown & Crouppen have helped our clients get compensation from the manufacturers and suppliers of unsafe drugs and products including Zyprexa, Rezulin, OxyContin, Crestor and Palladone. Consumers have the right to properly manufactured and labeled prescription medications that when used as directed will help them – not injure or kill them.

Palladone is a once-a-day version of the older painkiller hydromorphone. Unlike hydromorphone, which must be taken several times a day for effective pain relief, Palladone is designed so that the capsules will slowly dissolve over a 24-hour period. However, new studies indicate that the consumption of alcohol with Palladone can inhibit the capsule’s slow-release function and cause the entire dose of Palladone to enter the blood stream at one time. “Dose-dumping” refers to the rapid release of the active ingredient from an extended release drug into the blood stream. The combination of alcohol and Palladone can cause dose-dumping to occur at even the lowest marketed dose. The results of dose-dumping may lead to serious, or even fatal, adverse events in some individuals. According the FDA’s Acting Director for Drug Evaluation and Research, “…Even one drink could have fatal implications”.

The FDA's recall came on the heels of Purdue Pharma's (Palladone's manufacturer) study of the potential side-effects of alcohol use with Palladone.  Purdue Pharma also makes Oxycontin, another powerful narcotic.  Like many other narcotics, Palladone's label contains the warning against alcohol consumption while taking the painkiller.  However, the FDA ordered the suspension of sales and marketing of Palladone due to an unacceptably high level of patient risk.

If you have a prescribed supply of the drug, the FDA urges that you stop taking it and consult your physician for an alternative medication.  Should you continue to use up your supply of Palladone, DO NOT drink any alcohol or take other medicines that contain alcohol.  Also, Palladone must be swallowed whole because chewing, dissolving, or crushing the capsule can lead to rapid release of a potentially fatal dose.

It's really terrible to read about a prescription drug being recalled because of dangerous side effects, when you're one of the people taking it. That's what happened to me a few years ago. I suffer from a chronic disease and my doctor prescribed a drug to help me manage it better. After being on the drug for a while I began to feel weak and reported it to my doctor. I can't say enough good things about him, he saved my life. He realized that my problems were being caused not by my disease but by the prescription drug that was supposed to be helping me.    CONTINUE
