Remicade

Remicade (Infliximab) is an immune-suppressing drug used to treat various immune system diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis and Crohn's disease. In August 2009, the Food and Drug Administration announced findings that Remicade was associated with an increased risk of lymphoma and other cancers in children and adolescents.
Before the August 2009 cancer findings, Remicade already carried the FDA’s strongest “black box” warning for risk of fatal infections posed by the drug. The FDA has now required that Remicade’s manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson, add the cancer warning to the drug’s label and consumer information.

Remicade is one of several drugs known as TNF blockers that are approved for the treatment of immune system diseases, including juvenile idiopathic arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, plaque psoriasis, Crohn’s disease, and ankylosing spondylitis. In a study of children and adolescent cancer patients who had been treated with TNF blockers, the FDA identified an increased risk of cancer, occurring on average about 30 months after treatment had begun. About half of the cancers were lymphomas, a type of cancer involving cells of the immune system. Some of the cancers in the FDA study were fatal.
In November of 1999, the FDA approved Remicade to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Remicade acts as an immune suppressant. This makes patients who take Remicade extremely vulnerable to opportunistic infections, including tuberculosis and sepsis.
Distressing results have also been identified when Remicade was used in patients with congestive heart failure. In a study of 101 patients, seven died.
Reports also suggest that infusion reactions with hives, difficulty in breathing, and low blood pressure may also occur. Some people have experienced upper respiratory infections, headache, nausea, cough, sinusitis and rash skins.
